There is still a wide gap between high volume ETFs and low volume ETFs. In this survey of average daily volume for September, the Nasdaq 100 ETF (QQQQ) finished easily in pole position with 111 million shares traded per day. Wow. The Mexican Peso Trust rounded out the bottom with a mere 727 shares per day. Ole! There are over 30 ETFs averaging at least 1 million shares per day and over 100 ETFs averages at least 100,000 shares per day. The Euro Currency Trust (FXE) just missed the cut with a daily average of 86,000 shares. There are over 50 ETF averaging less than 25,000 shares per day. These are pretty thinly traded and the bid/ask spreads are larger as a result. The tables below show average daily volume for ETFs by category ranked from highest to lowest. Categories include: Major Stock Indices, Growth Value Indices, Sectors, Industry Groups, Commodities, Currencies, Bonds, International Indices and Specialty Indices.
